The Advantages Of Shopping For Organic Skin Care Products Online

By Olivia Cross

Organic has become a politically correct word. It is commonly linked to environmental causes as well as many manufactured products, and is loosely associated with the concept of living in harmony with the natural world. Substances with that label should contain no artificial or synthetic ingredients considered to be health hazards, and buying organic skin care products online allows consumers to make well-informed choices.

Simply including the term natural on a product label is not necessarily a benefit. Advertisers have been quick to exploit consumer fears regarding environmental issues and habitat destruction in order to sell more cosmetics. The petroleum industry refines a naturally occurring product that is the result of long-decayed vegetation beneath the surface of the earth, but no one really recommends using gasoline as a moisturizer.

When used in food designations, the word implies that fruits, vegetables and livestock have been raised and harvested without the aid of pesticides. In cosmetic manufacturing, the meaning is harder to actually pin down, and can generally be whatever the maker chooses to advertise. There is no single governmental agency that strictly regulates cosmetics, and few standards that guarantee efficacy and purity.

While some cosmetics are certified, that endorsement is not necessarily scientific. Companies can actually set their own standards regarding the quality and quantity of the natural ingredients used in a product, even if those amounts are considered negligible. In reality, most commercial cosmetics use both natural and synthetic ingredients, and very few can honestly claim to be completely free from manufactured substances.

Even formulas containing naturally grown and produced plant extracts can be harmful to some individuals. Although names such as rosemary, sandalwood or eucalyptus sound warm and inviting, they can produce discomfort for those with sensitive skin. Some users actually experience more benefits and less irritation when using cosmetics made with synthetics, and a lockstep condemnation of those substances is not logical.

Before buying any product any consumer should carefully examine the list of ingredients on the label. Substances advertised as being all-organic are required to contain no additional ingredients besides salt or water, and must have been grown without pesticide use. The United States Department of Agriculture is responsible for regulating foods labeled in this fashion, and having its seal is a good indicator of a genuine product.

Some items that are not really completely natural can actually be labeled in this manner, and are also allowed to contain pesticide residue. Most of this information available on the ingredients list, or can be requested from the manufacturer. When purchasing cosmetics, consumers may assume that some are all natural in composition, but in reality may contain up to thirty percent synthetic ingredients.

Buying skin care products over the Internet allows consumers to instantly research any questionable claims, and to read peer reviews. Simply enjoying an organic designation does not automatically mean that a product is superior, or even as good as those made with synthetics. When products cannot live up to certain advertising claims or have actually caused discomfort, it pays to carefully read and understand the label before buying.
